Questions about the music business, help?

Here are a few questions I would like to have answered.
I know very little about the "music world" and I would like to know
more
so I can move up higher in it.

1. Do you have to pay an agent or do they get paid when you get a gig?

2. Do you already have to be rich to become a well known singer?
3. Is it just the right place at the right time kind of thing?
4. Do you already have to know someone in a high place?
5. Does talent matter or is it just the "look"?
